We know it can be difficult to keep up with everything in September, it’s a busy month. As we book it into fall, we thought about what’s worth checking out, what’s free, and what’s enriching for the soul, the heart, and the mind.
Lucia di Lammermoor
- The New York City Opera x Bryant Park
A production of Gaetano Donizetti’s classic opera Lucia di Lammermoor is performing on September 2 at Bryant Park. Beginning at 7pm, the lawn will be filled to the brim with opera lovers, those who love the park, and anyone lucky enough to be pulled in. It’s first come first serve.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and CNN’s Zain Asher in Conversation With Elizabeth Egan
- The 92nd St Y
Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, New York Times journalist Elizabeth Egan, and CNN journalist Zain Asher are going to be in conversation (online and in person) with moderation done by Egan. Certain to appeal to fans of Adichie’s thoughts, and anyone who is interested in the after-event book signing.

The Armory Show at Javits Center
- Javits Center
It’s art fair week and one of the biggest is happening September 9 through 11 at the Javits Center, the Armory Show. Artists, fair lovers, and gallery dealers will all crowd the space as they do every year.

Independent Art Fair
- Independent Art Fair
One of the more unique alternatives to the Armory Show is the Independent Art Fair, running September 8 through 11 at the Battery Maritime Building. A more recent fair, having only been around since 2010, it’s appealing in the hope it may be less crowded than other fairs.

Free Screening of The Wiz
- Governor’s Island
Originally scheduled for August 5, this free screening of the classic 1978 film, which was originally a Broadway play, The Wiz will take place September 2. Fans of Black cinema, as well as generally The Wizard of Oz, will love this event.

Double Screening of Beth B and Scott B’s 1979 ‘Letters to Dad’ and ‘The Offenders’ at MoMA
- MoMA
Avant-garde figure Beth B’s collaborations with Scott B are showing in a double feature with ‘Letters to Dad’ and ‘The Offenders.’ The double screening takes place twice, once September 8 (which features a discussion with Scott B afterwards) at 6:30 pm and one September 10 at 4:30pm.

Clio Art Fair
- 550 W 29th St
Another fair for those who love and look forward to fair culture, or quite the opposite. Clio Art Fair self-describes as “an anti-fair for independent artists,” so expect more outsider work, maybe less expensive pieces, and artists who are actually down to talk to their audiences. Running September 8 through 11.
